As with other branches of optometry and medicine, nutrition and ocular preventive medicine are not without controversy. In this 2 hour panel discussion, we ask leading experts to discuss the controversy surrounding essential fatty acids such as omega 3 including dosing and the balancing act between n6 and n3 fats. We discuss the emerging link between vitamin D and ocular and systemic diseases. How much is enough? For macular degeneration, when should we use an AREDS supplement vs. a full spectrum supplement that includes the AREDS nutrients? Is there a role for the 3rd macular pigment – meso-zeaxanthin in the treatment of AMD? There are so many products. When should we suggest Multivitamins vs. Liquid Multivitamins vs. Whole Food products – which are best for individual situations? Finally, how does one evaluate the quality of a nutritional supplement?

This year marks the passing of the 150th anniversary of the Snellen acuity chart, an essential metric that has nonetheless restrained the evolution of the optometric physician. This is especially true when evaluating the 50+ year/old patient. AMD patients often loose low contrast acuity and are bothered by glare disability. Objective multi-spectral imaging of RPE melanin migration, fundus autofluorescence or SD OCT parafoveal retinal thinning allows for early objective AMD diagnosis. Measuring cone photo-stress glare recovery, dark adaptometry and macular pigment allows optometrists to follow changes in visual function with prescriptive nutrient intervention. On the low technology side, 5 minutes is all it takes for a basic ocular - nutrient deficiency assessment. The results of your effort will be better driving and performance vision for your patients, and a more profitable practice.
