Iris scanning is a method of biometric identification used to capture a high resolution digital photograph of an individual’s iris. It is so accurate it can tell the difference between twins or even an individual’s right and left eye. Iris scans can be done regardless of whether the subject is wearing contact lenses or glasses. As children grow or adults age, physical appearance may change but the iris stays the same.
Iris scanning is being used to positively identify children and adults who may not be able to give vital information to law enforcement or social service agencies should they become lost, disoriented, injured, or separated from their family. The scans are downloaded into secure nationwide networks maintained by the Nation’s Missing Children Organization and the National Center for Missing Adults.
